Writing an essay may be one of the hardest types of schoolwork or exam for other students. For others, it may just be the one that they’re very good at. Then we may ask ourselves “What could it take to be good at essay?”. If that’s the case let this article show you how to make good essays.
Prepare. Preparation is always a key component in completing and successfully doing any task. For essay writing, this still holds true. Below are some ways that makes you prepare for the essay itself.
Do a little more research than required. If you are required to write an essay about an article, a movie or any reading material, do so. Read and understand the material. After you have read the material, do a little more research yourself. For example if you’re require to write an essay about the holocaust, you may read further into the origin of the event, the people behind it. Make your essay stand out by keeping it fresh. Offer a personal perspective to it both good and bad. For this essay, you may even cite the good side like advanced planning and logistics together with cover up operations.
In this early stage, it would be best to start writing a draft on the outline of the essay, This is important because it will then make the flow of ideas and discussions in the essay more fluid.
Take note of page numbers, important info that are relevant to your essay. If the essay is due in a week make sure you do preparations the day it was given. This gives you ample time to write it.
Write. Before you actually write make some minor preparations this time. Be sure to have enough rest or sleep before writing. Then find a clean spot where you can write. A desk at your room, the library or a study room is appropriate. But wherever the place may be, make sure that it is free of distractions. You may have a radio for some music but never anything that can make you get up and stop writing (e.g. portable games, a cellular phone, etc.)
Make sure that when writing an essay, you have in mind the target reader. Take note of your target reader’s knowledge level and interests, as these are vital for your essay to be read completely and understood. Choose words that fit their reading level. Choosing hard words for low-level readers makes them lose interest in the essay. Simplicity should be a standard. Be simple yet factual. Unlike fiction writing, essays should be backed up by hard facts. This makes your essay solid and a driving force in expressing ideas and swaying people to your beliefs. It also increases your credibility as a writer.
Make multiple drafts. Be ready to read over, correct and revise. A good essay may be written once but the best essay that you can write comes from seeking perfection. With this thought, there is a need to revise.
Stay on topic and don’t deviate from it often. When you prove a point, cite credible back up info so that you’ll waste time and effort on a mini discussion that really isn’t needed.
